Calling rates to Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a British territory stationed in the Western Caribbean. It consists of three islands: Grand Cayman (Tortuga), Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. The islands received their name after an English navigator named Sir Francis Drake saw them during a voyage and saw they were populated by numerous crocodiles. ‘Caymanas’ was the indigenous word for crocodiles and the country’s namesake. Today, it is believed Sir Francis Drake mistook the island’s plentiful iguana for crocodiles, but the name has remained.

The nation has the 14th highest GDP in the world. With the average per capita income hovering just above $60,000, Cayman enjoys the greatest standard of living among the Caribbean nations. This does not mean the country is without financial trials; there is pointed impoverishment, but the government does much to offset the consequences of poverty that befalls their poorer citizens.

As a European territory, the Cayman Islands rely on Britain for military defense and managing major foreign arrangements.

  • Christopher Columbus saw the islands in 1503 because weather blew his ship off its course.
  • Due to its lack of rivers or natural fresh water deposits, the sea surrounding the Cayman Islands is stunningly clear.
  • Grand Cayman, the most prominent island of the three, was known as Tortuga in Spanish. This name became famous through its use in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
  • The beautiful Wild Banana Orchid is a species of exclusively found naturally on the Cayman Islands.
  • The Cayman Islands have more businesses registered than residents.
  • McDonalds is prohibited from ever opening a restaurant on Grand Cayman. After the corporation filed a lawsuit against a family restaurant on the island of the same name and lost the case, the courts banned the global chain from the island.
  • When Christopher Columbus made his early voyages through the North Atlantic Ocean, he spotted the Cayman Islands and named them ‘Las Tortugas’, which means ‘the turtles’ in Spanish. This was the name given years before Sir Francis Drake encountered the islands.
  • On Grand Cayman’s western shore, there is a famed coastline called Seven Mile Beach. It is often regarded as the best beach in the Caribbean, but its name is misleading since the beach is actually just under six miles long.
